Most dresses can be altered to fit. A dress that is too big can usually be altered down by a size or two. However, I would not recommend letting out seams to increase the size of a dress. This rarely achieves a satisfactory result, and is especially risky on a wedding gown. The easiest way to alter a dress can be to have it changed from a zip to a lace or corset back.
